MY SISTER - MY BEST FRIEND

Hi my name is Ellie-Marie

And this is daddy and my sister Emily

She is my best Friend,

But she has got something called “special needs.”

Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus 

The doctors knew about it before she was even born

So she was born in a special hospital

BC Children’s Hospital

But to me, she is fine---she is just “my sister” who can’t walk yet!

She was born with something called; Hydrocephalus 

That means the fluid in her brain does not flow quite right

She needed a shunt to fix the problem when she was 4 months old

The operation worked, but did not fix it the problem

Emily will have hydrocephalus for the rest of her life

which means operations called revisions to fix her shunt. Her first revision was at 23 months of age July 2012.

  If there was ever a place to kick start my journey toward a better understanding of hydrocephalus and the damage it could inflict on the brain of an infant , it was when I penned this just before Emily was to be shunted at 4 months of age; December 4 2010 and before she was to be fitted for a helmet at just shy of 13 months of ageHowever, in thinking how far she has actually come...thinking back to the grim prognosis that we were given a few short days before she was born was a sign and a little piece of mind that though she might have been facing an uphill battle, that still rages on today, she was and is a fighter and so too she was going to fight her way through this!

What books make such an impact that you, "REACT" in such a way that it has an impact for change.

If for only one title; kelle hampton.com  A memoir, Bloom, finding beauty in the unexpected, this book had captured my heart from the very moment I heard of the authors struggles after finding that her second had down-syndrom.

If there is "one hope" that I have in writing; "A LIFETIME COMMITMENT" it is, that we look past our insecurities and truly see "people" and "the person" before the "disability!"

The Years

The years, how they shaped us; there was my mom, my brother and my dad 

somewhere within the Monashee Mountain range (Lumby/Cherryville BC)
The beauty of, as my mom used to say, but I didn't really know because of their breakup and shake up

 

Good were the growing years and the years in between, but what meant the most to who I am today, were those most impressionable early years.

Good for me, but I am not sure my brother would agree
